Midreshet Yerushalayim in Eastern Europe
Most Jews of the former Soviet Union have been cut off from Jewish
life for more than three generations. Many are living in areas that
are impoverished and unstable. But families in the Ukraine are today
miraculously re-connecting with their Judaism through the study programs
of Midreshet Yerushalayim.
Over 1,000 Jewish children in the Ukraine are learning in this rapidly
growing school system, which provides Jewish education to renascent
Jewish communities in Chernowitz, Berdichev, Kiev, Priluki, Nikalayev,
Chirkasi, Lvov, and the Carpathian Mountain towns of Uzhgorod, Munkatch
and Hust. The schools stress community building through family-oriented,
intergenerational programming.
The TALI-Chernowitz Day School is the first
pluralistic Conservative Jewish Day School in the former Soviet Union.
Tali-Chernowitz provides a total Jewish community learning experience
to 340 pupils with a full curriculum of Jewish studies, afternoon activities,
family and adult education, and Shabbat/holiday programming. Since
its founding over a decade ago, this school has brought thousands of
children and their families back to the Jewish People.
Professional Development Seminars for Ukranian Teachers have
earned an outstanding reputation, enriching the backgrounds and enhancing
the pedagogic skills of Ukranian Jewish educators. Two weeklong seminars
are held each year for sixty teachers in Ukranian Jewish schools. Talented
lecturers from all over the FSU and Israel, hands-on workshops in Jewish
culture, creative religious services, and other programs make these seminars
a vital building block of Ukranian Jewish education.Midreshet Yerushalayim in Hungary: The University of Jewish Studies
