Annual
Report Highlights:
SIJS and the Academic World
Prof.
Alice Shalvi was awarded an honorary doctorate
from the Hebrew Union College in Jerusalem in October
and an honorary doctorate from the Weizman Institute
in Rehovot during their Jubilee Anniversary in November
2001.
The
second International Women's Studies Workshop on
"Changes and Directions in Women's Studies",
organized by Dr. Renee Levine Melammed was
held at the Schechter Institute in August. The workshop,
which coincided with the World Congress of Jewish
Studies, featured eight internationally known scholars
in the field.
Eight
Schechter faculty members spoke at the 13th
World Congress of Jewish Studies in Jerusalem in
August 2001.
Dr.
Alexander Even-Chen was a guest lecturer at
the Seminario Rabinico in Buenos Aires for the month
of August, teaching a course on "The Sacrifice
of Isaac in Medieval Jewish Commentaries?'
Dr.
Joseph Turner taught a summer course on "The
Problem of Faith in God and Man in Jewish Thought
Following the Holocaust," at the Jewish Theological
Seminary.
Dr.
Brenda Bacon presented papers at two June conferences:
"Change in TALI Teachers: Two Case Studies?'
at the Research Network in Jewish Education of North
America Conference in Toronto, and "The Anomaly
of the End of Bruriah'" at the Kolech (Forum
of Religious Women) Conference in Jerusalem.
Seven
Schechter faculty members - the largest representation
from any organization - taught at the 2001 Jewish
Agency Assembly "Bet Midrash?' in June. They
were Prof. David Golinkin, Dr. Alexander Even-Chen,
Rabbi Shlomo Tucker, Dr. Harvey Meirovich, Rabbi
Benjamin Segal, Michael Hovson and Dr. George
Savran.
Prof.
David Golinkin led the Siyyum (completion ceremony)
of Tractate Rosh Hashanah at the Rabbinical Assembly
Convention in Toronto in June. One of five scholars
chosen by the RA to speak at local Toronto synagogues,
he spoke at
Beth Tikvah Congregation on "How Should a Believing
Jew Relate to Biblical Criticism!"
Prof.
Alice Shalvi received the first Alice Salomon
Medal in Berlin in May, awarded for her "Contribution
to Social Welfare and Community." Alice Salomon,
a feminist pioneer in women's education and the
professionalization of social work, founded the
first school for social work in Europe, which was
named after her in 1932 on her 60th birthday. The
following year, she was expelled from Germany and
the name of the school was changed. The name was
restored ten years ago with the re-unification of
Germany.
Board
Members Prof. Lee Levine and Prof. Steven
Cohen lectured at the AACI Jubilee Conference
in May, on "Jewish Life in Israel: The Impact
of North American Olim?'
A
festive evening honoring SIJS Distinguished Professor
Moshe Greenberg was held in April at the Hebrew
University's Melton Center for Jewish Education.
Rabbi
Dr. Harvey Meirovich attended the third annual
conference on Rabbinic Education in Princeton, New
Jersey, in March. The event, which addressed the
challenges of "Curriculum Integration and Assessment,"
was attended by rabbinical school deans from all
streams in Judaism.
Prof.
Shamma Friedman traveled to New York in March
to participate in a conference on Jewish Law, marking
"I25 Years of the Hebrew Union College."
Dr.
Joseph Turner joined a group of international
scholars in Lucerne, Switerland in February, for
an international conference on "Franz Rosenzweig's
Star of Redemption," where he presented "Rosenzweig's
Reading of Psalm 90: Moses, Man of God." An
anthology of articles explaining the religious and
philosophical elements of Franz Rosenzweig's thought
will be published by the group.
Rabbi
Prof. David GoIinkin presented a paper in January
at the Hebrew University's Dinur Center on "The
Influence of Islam and Christianity on Jewish Law
in the Middle Ages."
Yair
Paz presented "First Evidence of Religious
Settlement in the Jerusalem Corridor during the
British Mandate," at a conference hosted by
Bar Ilan University on "Religious Moshavim"
which took place in January 2001.
Eight
Schechter faculty members participated in "Jewish
Identity at the Threshold of the Next Millenium,"
a conference held in December and co-sponsored by
the Schechter Institute, Hartman Institute, and
the Zalman Shazar Center. They included Prof.
David Golinkin, Prof. Alice Shalvi, Prof. Lee Levine,
Prof. Eliezer Schweid, Dr. Renee Levine Melammed,
Dr. Yossi Turner, Dr. Harvey Meirovich, and
Dr. Pinchas Bibelnik.
The
IsraeI Association for Research in Jewish Education,
of which the Schechter Institute is a founding member,
held its second international conference in December
2000. Schechter Institute was well represented with
Dr. Shmuel Glick presenting "The Contribution
of Responsa Literature to the Study of the History
of Jewish Education," Dr. Brenda Bacon,
"Change in TALI Teachers: Two Portraits,"
Dr. Hannah Regv, Rabbi Naama Helman
and Lisa Grant, "Traveling Towards the
Self while Visiting the Other." Additional
papers were given by two D.H.L. graduates, Dr.
Yaacov Amid, Asst. Director of a teachers' seminary
in Haifa and Dr. Dina Laron, involved in
teacher training at the Oranim Teachers' College.
Nurit Novis, a graduate of the Schechter Educational
Leadership program, presented a paper on "Pluralism
Among TALI Students."
Prof.
Reuven Hammer lectured at the Limmud Conference,
held at Nottingham University in England in December
on "Aaron in the Midrash," "Chanukah:
Myth and Reality" and "The Sh'ma and Conversion
in Our Time?'
Rabbi
Dr. Einat Ramon was a recipient of the 2000
HIRIJW Research Award for her work in progress,
Philosophical and Hermeneutical Features of Jewish
Feminist Thought and Practice.
Dr.
Jo Milgrom participated in a conference on "Teaching
the Bible," at the Van Leer Institute in December,
where she delivered a paper on "Handmade Midrash
and Visual Theology."
Dr.
ShmueI GIick participated in a U.S lecture tour
in conjunction with Haifa University, where he delivered
a lecture on "History, Theology and Pedagogy:
the Classic Rabbinic Sources and their Contribution
to Contemporary Education" at the University
of California and Brandeis University. In Jerusalem,
he presented "Cultural Influences on the Commentaries
of the Mishna - Ramifications for Today's Curriculum
in Jewish Education," at a conference at the
Melton Center for Jewish Education.
Dr.
Renee Levine MeIammed participated in a Ford
Foundation-sponsored International Workshop for
Early Modern Historians on "Accommodating Difference:
The Politics of Cultural Pluralism in Europe;' in
New York (Summer 2000) and Holland (Summer 2001).
Dr.
Joseph Turner was appointed to chair a discussion
group at the Van Leer Institute on "The Role
of Religion in Cultural Judaism," as part of
a three-year project established to research "Secular
Judaism." The group's work will culminate in
the publication of a series of papers and articles.
Dr.
David Levine and Board Member Rabbi David
Lazar taught a two-part weekend seminar series
in the spring to Marom (Masorti affiliated) university
students in Jerusalem on "Couples and Sexuality."
Dr.
AdoIfo Roitman presented a 10 - part series
(in Spanish) on "The Temple in the Biblical
Period: History, Architecture and Ideology:' through
the Interreligious Coordinating Council in Israel.

translated into Hebrew by Dr. Alexander Even-Chen.

Megillat
Hashoah, Aaron Appelfeld. The work, to be completed
by Holocaust Memorial Day 2002, will commemorate
the Holocaust as Eicha (Lamentations) is read on
Tisha B'av and Megillat Esther on Purim.
Halakhic
Solutions to the Agunah Dilemma in the 20th Century.
Broad in scope, the work surveys all proposed solutions
to this major problem. To be published by the Center
for Women in Jewish Law in 2002.
