The Illuminated Torah is a collection of 54 paintings representing each of the Weekly Torah Portions by the well-known Israeli artist, Avner Moriah. Each painting is accompanied by the verses it depicts in Hebrew and English. An insightful commentary is provided by Schechter’s Judaism and the Arts M.A. lecturer, Dr. Shulamit Laderman, who relates to the artist as an interpreter of the Bible.
Avner Moriah creates visual chronicles of the historic saga of the Jewish people, many of which are found in large-scale public works. His unique art also captures the landscapes and cityscapes of Israel. Moriah was born in Jerusalem in 1953 where he now lives and works. He is a graduate of the Bezalel Art Academy in Jerusalem and the Graduate School of Art and Architecture at Yale University where he received a MFA. His works have been acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY, the Israel Museum, the Holocaust Museum, Washington, DC, among others.
