We warmly congratulate Dr. Alon Tal, a member of the Schechter Rabbinical Seminary Executive Committee and Board of Governors, who received the Charles Bronfman Prize. The award, which recognizes extraordinary achievement by a young Jewish leader under 50, accepted nominations from around the world. Mr. Charles Bronfman presented the award to Dr. Tal in a ceremony held at Jerusalem's City Hall on January 10, 2006.
Dr. Alon Tal is an environmentalist whose passionate activism has changed the face of environmental policy in Israel. He has inspired people throughout the Middle East to find common ground in preserving the region's environmental health for future generations and has been uniquely effective in developing a dynamic regional environmental movement.
Dr. Tal established Adam Teva V'din, the Israel Union for Environmental Defense (1990) and the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies (1996). He serves as Professor of Environmental Policy at Ben Gurion University and most recently was appointed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to join Israel's government delegation for combating desertification at the United Nations.
An active member of the Masorti community Shalhevet Maccabim in Reut-Maccabim, Dr. Tal helped establish the Green Zionist Alliance, which strengthened the ecological programs of the Jewish National Fund.
The Schechter "family" applauds the achievements of Dr. Tal and is proud to have him as a partner in our mission of furthering pluralistic Jewish education.
