Jerome and Miriam Katzin Chair in Jewish Studies
established at the Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies in Jerusalem
First Chair in Jewish Studies for Schechter Institute
December 8, 2005
The Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies in Jerusalem, a fully accredited Israeli Graduate School offering M.A. degrees in Jewish Studies, announced today the establishment of the Jerome and Miriam Katzin Chair in Jewish Studies.
Jerome Katzin of San Diego, California, is a distinguished civic and business leader. From 1953 until he retired in 1990, Katzin was engaged in investment banking and was a managing director with Kuhn Loeb and Co. and then with Lehman Brothers. A graduate of the University of Chicago, he also received a J.D. degree from the University of Chicago Law School. In the past, the Katzins established the Prof. Louis Finkelstein Chair in Talmud and Jewish Law at the Jewish Theological Seminary and the Endowed Chair in Jewish Civilization at the University of California San Diego.
"We are very grateful to the Katzins for this generous endowment. The Schechter Institute is very proud that its first Chair in Jewish Studies will forever carry the name of Jerome and Miriam Katzin," said Robert S. Rifkind, the Institute's Chairman of the Board.
The endowment of a Chair establishes a perpetual fund that provides annual income to support the academic and research efforts of a tenured faculty member in Jewish studies. "Establishing the first endowed Chair at Schechter on the occasion of the Institute's first commencement exercises as an Israeli academic institution is a significant milestone. We hope that this is the first of many endowed Chairs at Schechter", said Prof. David Golinkin, President of the Institute.
The Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies offers a fully accredited Masters Degree program to over 450 students. Every student takes two majors from the twelve offered; the majors include traditional subjects such as Bible, Talmud and Jewish History alongside of innovative subjects such as Jewish Women's Studies and Judaism and the Arts. The Schechter Institute is dedicated to academic excellence, tolerance, pluralism and an appreciation of Jewish tradition. Schechter students and graduates are actively involved in Jewish education throughout the State of Israel.
