Rosh Hodesh Services

Question

How is Rosh Hodesh [the first day of the new month in the Jewish calendar, celebrated one or two days each month] celebrated, besides saying the extra Musaf prayers [extra services on Shabbat and holidays] and insertions in the Shemoneh Esreh [statutory prayer said standing, three times a day]?

Answer

The service on Rosh Hodesh also includes Hatzi Hallel and Torah reading. Over the last thirty years women's Rosh Hodesh groups have developed all over the world. They often include special new rituals and study. I recommend that you check out websites such as www.ritualwell.org and www.jofa.org as well as books and articles such as Susan Berrin's Celebrating the New Moon, A Rosh Chodesh Anthology.

Sincerely,

Rabbi Diana Villa
