Sunday Hanukkah Bar Mitzvah

Question

I am interested in having a Sunday, Hanukkah Bar Mitzvah for my son. I need input as to what to do. Which service, reading Torah during Hanukkah etc.

Thank you.

Marsha

Answer

Dear Marsha:

The service for Hanukkah is the regular weekly service, though "Al Hanissim", a special prayer recalling the miracle of Hanukah is added in the Amidah (the section of the morning service we say standing up, after the Shemah).

The Hanukkah service also includes Hallel, a prayer praising God composed of Psalms, chapters 113 to 118, with blessings at the beginning and at the end.

The Torah section is from Parashat Naso, in the book of Numbers. If your son's Bar Mitzvah is this year, that means you will be celebrating it on Sunday, December 21st, 2003, the 26th of Kislev 5764, the second day of Hanukkah. The reading for the second day of Hanukkah is Numbers, chapter 7, verses 18 to 29. (In Israel a shorter section is read and some verses repeated, but I take it your son is having his Bar Mitzvah ceremony outside of Israel). If you are planning more than a year in advance, I would have to check the calendar to give you the exact reading for that particular year.

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Diana Villa
