MORE THAN ONE SERVICE LEADER FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES
July 2006
Rabbi Diana Villa

Question

Dear Rabbi,

This question arose regarding services in summer camp:
For educational purposes, may more than one person lead
- birchot hashahar [preliminary blessings]?
- shacharit [morning prayer]?
May, the group continue to sing the blessings for havdalah [ceremony marking the end of the Sabbath], for educational purposes - so that the kids learn the blessings? or should they stop and listen to the leader saying the blessing?

Answer

In our opinion as long as the campers are under Bar/Bat Mitzvah ages there would certainly be no problem leshem chinuch (for educational purposes) with any of the prayers. If the campers are older than that, the only prayer in which it may be required for the leader to be motzi yedei chovah (have the rest of the congregation fulfill the commandment through the prayer leader), would be the amidah [central prayer, said while standing three times a day]. Therefore it would be preferable to have only one leader for that part of the service.
